Grade 2 Literary Detectives: Solving the Mystery Through Inferencing!

October 16, 2026

Jefferson second graders in Ms. Russell and Ms. Bifulco’s class stepped into the role of “literary detectives” as they explored an important reading skill: inferencing. Their teachers explained that inferencing means making a “smart guess” by combining what we already know with clues from a text to uncover information the author doesn’t state directly.

To put this skill into practice, students took part in a hands-on mystery activity. Using eight different items as clues, they made inferences about a mysterious neighbor, including the person’s interests, possible pets, and other details about their life. Next, each student selected four items, recorded their observations, and explained the inferences they drew from the evidence. This engaging activity brought reading to life while helping our young detectives strengthen their inferencing skills, develop critical-thinking abilities, and discover how readers use clues to draw conclusions.
