Transforming Geometry: A Halloween-Themed Lesson in Rigid Transformations

november 4, 2026

Last week in Miss Martin and Mrs. O'Brien's Geometry class, students brought rigid transformations to life with a fun, Halloween-themed lesson filled with movement, music, collaboration, and a little friendly competition!

Students kicked off the lesson with an interactive card sort warm-up, activating their prior knowledge of reflections, rotations, and translations as they matched and analyzed different transformations. Next came the main event. Working in small groups, students traveled around the classroom to different stations featuring large coordinate grids and Halloween-themed figures. Throughout the activity, students worked collaboratively to build upon one another’s transformations. In the initial rounds, students performed individual rigid transformations, with subsequent groups adding additional transformations to the figures.

As the rounds progressed, students built complete sequences of rigid transformations, challenging their classmates to analyze and describe the series of movements that took the original figure to its final image. The activity also incorporated error analysis and peer assessment, as students examined their classmates’ written descriptions of transformation sequences, checked for mathematical accuracy, and identified and corrected any errors. This encouraged students to think critically, justify their reasoning, and engage in meaningful mathematical discussions. To keep everyone actively engaged, students who finished their tasks early were given a “Side Quest” challenge to tackle while waiting for their peers to complete each round. This provided an additional opportunity to apply their mathematical reasoning and challenge themselves at their own pace. To close out the lesson, students became the question creators! Using sentence starters as scaffolds, each student designed an original question involving rigid transformations for their exit ticket. One student-created question will be selected and featured as the Do Now in the next class, giving students the opportunity to see their own mathematical thinking become part of the learning experience! The lesson transformed a traditional Geometry topic into an interactive, student-centered experience that encouraged critical thinking, mathematical communication, collaboration, error analysis, and creativity-all while celebrating Halloween!
