Michael Ferreira Named Huntington Boys’ Basketball Coach
May 5, 2026
A new era is beginning for the Huntington High School boys’ basketball program with the hiring of new head coach Michael Ferreira, who is coming to the Blue Devils after a wildly successful run as the varsity girls’ head coach at Syosset, where he won Nassau and Long Island titles and reached the state finals.
Mr. Ferreira holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from SUNY Oswego and Touro College. He teaches College Engineering and College Architecture at Syosset.
Huntington High School physical education teacher Jake Torres has been appointed to serve as the varsity assistant to Mr. Ferreira. Joe Crocco will be returning as the junior varsity boys’ basketball head coach
The Blue Devils will play in Section XI’s League III next winter. The league also includes Northport, Smithtown East, Half Hollow Hills East, Deer Park, Bellport, East Islip, West Babylon and Comsewogue. Every team except Northport (AAA) will compete in the Class AA playoffs.
Huntington will play 16 league games and four non league games. A winning record in league play is required to qualify for the playoffs.
Mr. Ferreira has been meeting with players for voluntary off-season workouts. The team has looked surprisingly sharp in spring league play. A youth summer camp is planned. The team is also expected to play in a summer league and in a fall league before beginning official practice sessions in mid-November.
