Washington Students Explore Book of the Month Story

March 11, 2026

Washington Primary School students have been exploring the inspiring story of Dr. Patricia Bath through the book “The Doctor with an Eye for Eyes,” which was selected as the Principal’s Book of the Month in honor of Women’s History Month.

During a recent lesson, third grade students learned about Dr. Bath’s groundbreaking work as an ophthalmologist and inventor who developed a treatment to help restore people’s sight. As students listened to her story, they identified the many obstacles she faced and discussed how she demonstrated perseverance, Washington’s social emotional learning (SEL) theme for the month.

“Through discussion and reflection activities, students connected Dr. Bath’s determination to their own lives by thinking about challenges they face and how they can keep trying even when something feels difficult,” Principal Dr. Michelle J. Richards said. “The lesson encouraged students to understand that perseverance means not giving up and continuing to work toward a goal.”

One student shared, “I learned that if something is hard, you shouldn’t quit because you might invent something amazing like Dr. Bath.”

By connecting literature, history, and social emotional learning, students were able to celebrate an important historical figure while building skills that will help them grow as learners and problem-solvers.
