Finley Softball Displays Tremendous Offensive Growth
June 22, 2026
In her first season as J. Taylor Finley Middle School’s softball coach, teacher Christin Federici notched improvements in individual players as well as the program in general.
Finley was captained by Lia Rotunno, Amiyah Herring, Scarlett Phillips, Gretchen Schmid and Grace Gonzalez. The final roster contained the names of 20 players.
“Some of our team’s biggest accomplishments this season included recording a rare triple play and showing tremendous growth offensively,” Federici said. “The team consistently improved at the plate, resulting in countless hits, stolen bases, and opportunities to get on base throughout the season. These accomplishments were possible because of the players' hard work, willingness to learn, and commitment to improving their skills each day. Despite many athletes being new to organized sports, they developed confidence, teamwork, and a stronger understanding of the game as the season progressed.”
The top players included:
• Lia Rotunno- 1st base, 8th grade, 1.157 OPS, .429 AVG, .538 OBP, 9 hits;
Coach Federici on Lia Rotunno: “Lia led the team in hits and total bases, making her one of the most productive offensive players all season.”
• Gretchen Schmid- 2nd base, 8th grade, 1.052 OPS, .350 AVG, .552 OBP, 7 hits;
Coach Federici on Gretchen Schmid: “Gretchen combined power and speed with 7 hits, 3 doubles, 7 stolen bases, and only 2 strikeouts.”
• Ava Tortora- 3B/SS, 8th grade, .912 OPS, .286 AVG, .531 OBP, 6 hits
Coach Federici on Ava Tortora: “Ava showed exceptional plate discipline by drawing a team-leading 11 walks while adding 6 hits and 4 stolen bases.”
“Many of our players started the season with little to no softball experience, but they never stopped learning, competing, and supporting one another,” Federici said. “As a first-year coach, I couldn’t have asked for a better group of student-athletes. Their effort, resilience, and positive attitude made the season rewarding and memorable. The scoreboard didn't always tell the full story. The progress these athletes made from the first practice to the final game was remarkable. This team's greatest accomplishment wasn't about winning—it was the growth, confidence, and teamwork they developed throughout the season.”
