The team effort included occupational therapist Meredith Kennelly and physical therapist Stephanie Kelly, who both provided expertise and input when it came to choosing materials.

“The sensory room supports the diverse needs of all students with and without disabilities,” Flower Hill Principal Cindy Siegel said. “The sensory space provides a safe and calming environment where students can engage with various sensory activities, helping them to manage emotions, reduce anxiety, and improve focus.”

By incorporating elements such as soft lighting, calming music, and tactile objects, this space allows students to take breaks and return to class refreshed and ready to learn. The sensory space supports curriculum by integrating sensory activities that promote hands-on learning experiences and social emotional learning. For example, students can explore textures or engage in movement exercises that enhance physical education skills.

The grant funds purchased equipment and materials specifically tailored to create an inclusive space that accommodates sensory needs, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to thrive academically and socially. This initiative not only promotes well-being but also fosters an understanding of sensory processing, benefiting the entire school community.
