Sergio Portillo Wins Director’s Award for Chorus

Huntington’s Sergio Portillo is this year’s recipient of the Director’s Award for Chorus. The Class of 2026 member was presented with the recognition at the annual Senior Departmental Awards & Scholarships Night in the high school auditorium.

An Advanced Placement Scholar, Mr. Portillo was also named a Distinguished Senior last spring and honored at a dinner with classmates in the school gym. He was presented with the director’s award by high school chorus Director Charles Colasanti. He was a tenor in the chamber choir.

“The key to my success has been managing my time properly and working on assignments as soon as they are assigned to me,” Mr. Portillo said. “The thing I enjoyed the most in high school was getting to know and be-friend my classmates. A highlight of my extracurricular involvement was my first production with the Drama Club.”

Huntington High School’s concert and chamber choirs have been winning awards for decades. Both are very highly regarded in and around the community and they each perform in concert several times annually.

Mr. Portillo intends to pursue an academic major in biochemistry at Stony Brook University.

Charles Colasanti attended Hofstra University and received a Bachelor of Science in Music Education Degree in 2022, as well as a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies at Stony Brook University in 2025. Prior to his appointment in the Huntington School District, he taught middle school choir in the Patchogue-Medford School District, as well as directed Show Choir and co-directed musicals.

At Huntington High School, Mr. Colasanti was appointed as Choral Director in 2024 and teaches Concert Choir, Chamber Choir, and conducts the Acapella ensemble.
