ATH Presents Carol Soskil Scholarship to Cameron Smith

The Associated Teachers of Huntington presented a $1,000 scholarship to Huntington High School Class of 2026 member Cameron A. Smith in honor of longtime district reading teacher Carol Soskil, who passed away in August 2020.

An Advanced Placement Scholar, Ms. Smith was recognized as a Distinguished Senior last spring following a great four year run through the high school. She will be attending the Gettysburg College and study education.

The ATH is the professional organization of the district’s more than 400 teachers. ATH President Elizabeth Flanagan announced Ms. Smith as this year’s Carol Soskil Memorial Scholarship recipient.

“The key to my success has been staying actively involved in the school community,” Ms. Smith said. “Throughout high school, I made the effort to participate in as many opportunities as possible, from academics to athletics to clubs. Being involved allowed me to build strong relationships with my peers and teachers. Athletics have been the most meaningful part of my high school experience. Playing varsity soccer and varsity lacrosse helped build a strong sense of community and family among my teammates. The relationships and memories made both on and off the field over the past four years are something I will always value.”

Ms. Soskil was a beloved reading teacher at Washington Primary School, where Ms. Smith attended school during her earliest years in Huntington UFSD. Students were at ease around her. She worked in multiple programs outside of the regular school day, including the summer. Her faculty colleagues loved her just as much as the kids did and deeply respected her as a consummate professional.

Ms. Smith was inducted into six separate academic honor societies. She served as president of Huntington’s Varsity Club and maintained membership in both Habitat for Humanity and the Latin Club. She was a representative on the Section XI Student Athlete Advisory Committee.
