Finley Showcases Impressive Players
January 23, 2026
The Finley boys’ basketball team coached by Tim Madden wrapped up its season this week. The squad was especially competitive and showcased some impressive players.
The squad was led by eighth graders Noah Black (point guard), Connor Kuhn (forward) Charlie Gordon (guard) and Blake Schmale (guard) and seventh grade guard Aiden Stephen.
“Noah Black is a strong player who combines skill with effort,” Madden said. “He can handle the ball, knock down perimeter shots and attack the basket. Connor Kuhn is a multi-talented player who can score from the perimeter and inside the paint. Connor’s leadership and hustle, especially on the boards, show his commitment to doing whatever the team needs to win. Blake Schmale is a player who gives great effort on both ends of the floor. With his ability to make shots and his nonstop effort, he is a reliable and impactful player who helps his team in every part of the game. Charlie Gordon is a talented leader on the court. He can control the pace of the game while making smart passes to keep the offense moving. Aiden Stephen is a dependable and skilled player who contributes in every area of the game. He handles the ball with confidence, shoots effectively from outside, and finishes strong around the rim.”
Finley’s school colors are blue and white and the two boys’ basketball teams are designated “White” and “Blue” by Section XI. Madden’s team was Finley’s “Blue” team.
“I am incredibly proud of how this team competed and fought hard in every basketball game,” Madden said. “Wins and losses never defined the effort this group gave. They showed heart, determination, and resilience every time they stepped on the court. One of our best performances came against a very tough Finley-White team. The win was a hard-fought battle, as we had to withstand multiple comeback attempts throughout the game. Our players stayed composed, supported each other, and made key plays when it mattered most to earn the victory. An even prouder moment came in our final game against Elwood. One of our more inexperienced players, Mannasseh Appiahgyei, who improved tremendously throughout the season, scored his very first basket as time expired to seal the victory. As the buzzer sounded, every player rushed off the bench to celebrate and congratulate him. That moment captured everything this team stood for; hard work, improvement, unity, and genuine support for one another. It was a perfect ending to a season full of growth and heart.”
The team practiced daily at Finley and played a schedule of five home and five away games.
“This team showed what can happen when hard work, commitment, and a positive attitude come together,” Madden said. “From the beginning of the season to the end, they improved greatly by putting in consistent effort at practices and giving their best during games. They learned from mistakes, pushed through challenges, and grew stronger with every week. What made this team special was how much they supported one another. They rooted hard for each other’s success, celebrating big plays, encouraging each other after setbacks, and always staying connected as a group. Every player wanted not only to improve themselves, but also to see their teammates succeed. Most importantly, they had fun along the way. Their energy, enthusiasm, and love for the game showed every time they stepped on the court. By working hard, improving together, and supporting one another, this team built more than just skills—they built trust, confidence, and lasting memories.”
Finley played its games before spirited crowds. Even Superintendent Beth McCoy turned out during the season.
“With a roster full of eighth graders moving on, the team will rely on the next group of players to step up, take on leadership roles, and continue to build the program,” Madden said.
