Blue Devil Girls’ Prep for State Track Qualifier

February 5, 2026

Huntington’s Jesley Martinez Canales came out swinging at the Section XI Large School Indoor Girls’ Track & Field Championships at Suffolk-West in Brentwood. The teenager captured second place in shot put with a personal best throw of 32-02 feet, making it clear she’s ready to compete on the state stage.

Teammate Anis Oyuela wasn’t far behind, finishing third in shot put with a PR of 32-8.25 feet after time away to visit relatives out of the country; proof that she’s back, locked in and very much in the state conversation.

Norah Moskowitz battled her way to a fifth-place finish in the 600m, showing grit, perseverance and a mindset that says she’s not done yet. “Her eyes are set on the state team and she’s chasing it hard,” first year head coach Dennis Scruggs said.

Martinez and Oyuela will be back in action Monday night at the state qualifier at Suffolk-West. Moskowitz will hit the track Tuesday on a solo mission, as she is the last Blue Devil runner still competing with the goal of earning her spot on the state team. “She’s ready and has worked extremely hard to put herself in this position; now it’s time to seize the moment,” Scruggs said.

Huntington is looking to peak at the state qualifier and push through as many Blue Devils as possible.

“From a coaching standpoint, the throwers have truly been the heart and soul of this team,” Scruggs said. “They lead by example and have shown incredible growth throughout the season. Their confidence, consistency, and competitiveness continue to raise the standard for everyone around them, and the sky is the limit as we look ahead to Monday and Tuesday night.”
