Three sport Huntington High School star Ava McDonald has committed to the University of Delaware’s NCAA Division I women’s lacrosse program. The Blue Devil junior did all the due diligence one would expect of next year’s president of the Varsity Club.

Huntington junior Ava McDonald has committed to the Univ. of Delaware women's lacrosse team.

“I chose Delaware because it felt like the perfect fit both academically and athletically,” Ms. McDonald said. “The coaching staff was very welcoming and made me feel like I could grow as both a player and a person. I also loved the competitive level of the lacrosse program and the team culture they really push each other while still being supportive. Overall, it just felt like the right place for me.”

The teenager is interested in studying education or sports management, “I hope to pursue a career connected to athletics,” Ms. McDonald said. “Playing three sports for Huntington has meant a lot to me, especially being able to accomplish so much across different sports alongside my best friends.”

Ms. McDonald has been one of Long Island’s top soccer, basketball and lacrosse players throughout high school. Her exceptional defensive play helped the Huntington girls’ lacrosse team win their first county and Long Island championships in more than a generation last spring. She is back on the field again and has helped the Blue Devils win their first seven consecutive games.

“Wearing the Blue Devil uniform means a lot to me,” Ms. McDonald said. “Growing up watching my siblings and cousins play, it’s always been a dream of mine. Being able to wear it and win a Long Island championship in it makes it even more special.”

Some of the teachers and coaches who have played key roles in Ms. McDonald’s life over the years are Kristina Morell, Sarah Buchalter, Perry Marinelli and Megan Marinelli. They have all made a big impact on my experience here and have helped push me to be my best,” she said.

Ms. McDonald’s advice to J. Taylor Finley Middle School athletes getting ready for their high school careers? “Don’t be afraid to make an impact,” she said. “Be confident, work hard, and have fun. I definitely recommend playing three sports. It helps you become a better overall athlete, keeps things fun and teaches you different skills that carry over into each sport.”
