Celebrating Diversity and Belonging in Grade 2 ENL

Grade 2 ENL students with Ms. Herbert at Jefferson Primary School recently participated in a meaningful lesson celebrating their diverse backgrounds, cultures, and the many places they call home.

Students read Where Are You From? by Yamile Saied Méndez and engaged in thoughtful conversations about how each person’s background and experiences help shape who they are. The lesson encouraged students to recognize and celebrate their differences while also understanding the importance of belonging and community.

To bring the lesson to life, students created and decorated their own flags representing their countries, cultures, and family backgrounds. They were excited to share their creations with classmates and proudly talk about the unique qualities that make their families special.

The activity provided a wonderful opportunity for students to celebrate diversity while reinforcing an important message: Every student has a place in our school community, and each individual brings something special and valuable to our shared community.
