Postsecondary Planning for Every Grade Level at HHS

As the 2026–2027 school year gets underway, the Huntington High School College and Career Center is reminding students and families that postsecondary planning begins well before senior year.

Whether students are considering college, a career, the military, a technical program, or another pathway after high school, early exploration can help them better understand their interests, identify opportunities, and make informed decisions about their future.

“Postsecondary planning is not a one-time conversation that happens during senior year,” said Dr. Ricky Papandrea, Director of School Counseling and Testing, K-12. “We want students to begin exploring their interests, strengths, and possibilities early and continue building on that exploration throughout high school. Our goal is for every Huntington student to graduate with a plan for what comes next.”

Postsecondary Planning for Every Grade Level

Postsecondary planning is a process that evolves throughout high school. Younger students can begin exploring their interests, getting involved in school and community activities, and learning about different careers. As students progress through high school, they can begin researching colleges, career pathways, scholarships, financial aid, and other opportunities that align with their goals.

Through Naviance, students can explore careers, colleges, scholarships, interest inventories, and other resources, including Roadtrip Nation. Students are also encouraged to participate in clubs, activities, athletics, community service, and other experiences that help them develop valuable skills and build their resumes.

“The College and Career Center is a place where students can ask questions, explore possibilities, and connect with resources to help them take their next steps,” said Bernadette Walsh, school counselor in the College and Career Center. “Students do not need to have their future completely figured out before they visit us. Sometimes the first step is simply starting the conversation.”

A Resource for Students and Families

Located in Room 120 at Huntington High School, the College and Career Center is available to support students throughout their high school experience. Families can also stay informed through the College & Career Center Friday Flyer, published weekly on the HUFSD website and featuring information about college fairs, admissions events, scholarships, financial aid, summer programs, and other opportunities.

Families are encouraged to begin conversations about the future early, revisit them often, and encourage students to take advantage of the many resources available to them.
