Strengthening Our PBIS Expectations at Southdown

At Southdown, we are committed to creating a school community where every student feels safe, supported, and ready to learn. This year, we are taking time to revisit and strengthen our PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) Matrix, with a continued focus on what it means to Be Safe, Be Responsible, and Be Respectful in all areas of our school.

Throughout September and October, students and staff are reviewing one area of our PBIS Matrix each week. Each Monday, students are introduced to the week’s focus and explore what the expectations “look like” and “sound like” through discussion and targeted videos. During the remainder of the week, students take a closer look at the three key expectations—Be Safe, Be Responsible, and Be Respectful—and discuss how they can demonstrate these behaviors in their daily routines.

Our weekly review also provides opportunities to recognize, praise, and celebrate students who demonstrate our schoolwide expectations. On Fridays, classes revisit all three areas, reflect on examples of positive behavior from the week, and identify student “models” who can demonstrate what meeting our expectations looks like in action.

By intentionally revisiting our PBIS Matrix, we are building a shared understanding of the behaviors that help our school community thrive. Most importantly, we are giving students consistent language, clear expectations, and positive reinforcement so that being safe, responsible, and respectful becomes part of who we are at Southdown every day.
