Cracking the Code: Students Put Polynomial Skills to the Test in Math Escape Room

Math came to life as students in Ms. Martin’s class participated in an engaging, hands on escape room designed to review and reinforce their understanding of polynomial operations and algebraic vocabulary.

Students rotated around the classroom to complete six colorful puzzles, each presenting a different mathematical challenge. Working through the activities, students practiced adding, subtracting, and multiplying polynomials while reviewing important vocabulary including linear, quadratic, cubic, monomial, binomial, and trinomial.

Several of the puzzles also challenged students to apply their mathematical thinking to real world situations. For example, students were asked to determine the area of a rectangle and then use that information to multiply a binomial by a binomial. An anchor chart displayed at the front of the classroom provided students with an additional resource they could reference as they worked through challenging problems.

The structure of the escape room encouraged students to take ownership of their learning. Students carried whiteboards on clipboards so they could show their mathematical thinking and record their work as they solved each puzzle. They also used answer sheets to record solutions and codes as they progressed through the activity.

Students had the flexibility to work independently or collaborate with a partner, giving them the opportunity to select the level of support that best met their needs. With music playing in the background and students actively moving throughout the classroom, the environment was energetic, focused, and filled with mathematical problem solving.

The escape room format provided students with an opportunity to practice essential skills in an engaging way while developing independence, collaboration, perseverance, and critical thinking. By turning review into a challenge, Ms. Martin created an environment where students were not simply solving problems, but actively working together to unlock the next step in their learning.
