Social Studies Honor Society Invites Candidate Applications
September 10, 2026
Huntington High School academic honor societies are in the midst of soliciting candidate applications. Among the organizations seeking new members is Huntington’s chapter of Rho Kappa, the national Social Studies Honor Society. This year's induction into the Social Studies Honor Society is scheduled for October 20.
Both the Social Studies and English Honor Societies' inductions are slated for the same evening. Students who appear to meet the membership criteria are being encouraged to apply. Prospective members must be a junior or a senior and have an overall grade average of at least 85 with an unweighted social studies grade average of 90 or higher.
“Rho Kappa seeks to promote scholarship and recognize excellence in the field of social studies; provide opportunities for exploration of the field through local chapters; and encourage interest in and foster appreciation of the field,” Huntington faculty advisor Debora Balducci said. “Applicants to Rho Kappa must meet the membership criteria in addition to showing participation in activities that demonstrate civic engagement and a desire to be a member of the organization,” Mr. Leavy, the chairperson of Social Studies added.
Membership applications can be obtained from and returned to Ms. Balducci in person or via email at dbalducci@hufsd.edu. Applicants can also come to room 255 and speak with Ms. Kostinsky to acquire an application. Once completed, applications can be given to any social studies teacher or dropped off at the October 6 meeting of the Social Studies Honor Society in Room 214.
The National Council for the Social Studies started the Rho Kappa Social Studies Honor Society in 2011. Huntington High School has held over 10 induction ceremonies since starting its own chapter of Rho Kappa.
