Freshman Seminar Expected to Pay Immediate Dividends

Huntington High School’s multi-day freshman seminar is expected to pay immediate dividends for its 124 participants as the new year gets underway.

The 13th edition of the initiative benefitted from having 12 upperclassmen acting as assistants to the teachers leading the program and mentors to the incoming ninth graders. The three-day workshop ran daily from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. “It was appreciated by all, especially those who were able to attend all three days,” said lead teacher Suzi Biagi-Quigley.

The ten veteran teachers staffing the program enjoyed meeting the students and they appreciated their enthusiasm. “It’s always such a pleasure getting to know some of the freshmen ahead of time and helping alleviate some of their anticipation about going to high school,” Mrs. Biagi-Quigley said.

The program was designed to help the freshmen prepare for the rigor and expectations of life at Huntington High School. The workshop included “getting to know you” activities, scavenger hunts, team building exercises and learning about organization for the high school student, among other topics.

“There were role-plays, games and in-depth discussions about what it means to be a high school student,” Mrs. Biagi-Quigley said. “The program had something for everyone and also included tours of the building, learning about key faculty and staff members, where to go for support, clubs, sports and honor societies. Free lunch was provided every day and all the students were able to go home with an assortment of school supplies on the final day.”

• “I learned about the high school rules, especially about needing passes and no phones or air pods.”

• “Now I can help my friends and feel more comfortable on the first day of school.”

• “The team building was fun and if you weren't here you really missed out.”

• There are lots of people to help you, just ask.

• There is a club or two for everyone.

• It's okay to be nervous but there is nothing to be afraid of.

• There are morning and afternoon bake sales sometimes.

• You can carry your backpack.
