Fourth Grade Students Build Bridges Through Project Based Learning

October 29, 2026

Fourth grade students at Woodhull Intermediate School and Jack Abrams Intermediate School are putting their creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving skills to the test in their Project Based Learning (PBL) class, taught by Jessica Risalvato.

As they near the completion of their first PBL unit, students have been exploring the engineering design process by designing and constructing strong, sturdy bridges. Working collaboratively in groups, students first developed and labeled their bridge designs before bringing their plans to life using just 20 straws and tape.

Through this hands-on challenge, students are learning to plan, communicate ideas, work as a team, and apply critical thinking skills as they explore engineering concepts and test their designs.

This engaging project provides students with an opportunity to learn through experimentation, creativity, and collaboration while developing skills they can use both inside and outside the classroom.
