Woodhull’s Visit to the Cold Spring Harbor DNA Learning Center

October 20, 2026

Woodhull's 6th graders had an exciting and educational visit to the Cold Spring Harbor DNA Learning Center, where they explored the fascinating story of Ötzi the Iceman! Discovered in the Italian Alps in 1991, Ötzi is a 5,300-year-old naturally preserved mummy who has helped scientists uncover clues about life during the Copper Age. Students toured an exhibit featuring a 3D replica of Ötzi and learned about his medical and genetic history, the mystery surrounding his death, and what scientists have discovered about his life thousands of years ago.

During a hands-on investigation, students used compound microscopes to examine and identify pollen found in Ötzi’s body. They learned how scientists use pollen as a forensic tool to track where he may have traveled during the final 36 hours of his life!

From examining microscopic evidence to exploring ancient history, our 6th graders had the opportunity to think like real scientists and archaeologists. It was an incredible hands-on experience that brought science and history together and showed students how tiny clues can reveal fascinating details about the past!
