Young Artists Explore Creativity Through Hands-On Learning

October 19, 2026

Students in Mr. Matarazzo’s art classes are discovering that creativity has no limits as they explore a variety of artists, techniques, and materials through engaging, hands-on projects!

Our youngest artists are building their understanding of shapes as kindergarten students design colorful robots using pre-cut geometric shapes. First graders are taking inspiration from Wassily Kandinsky’s Composition 8, creating their own abstract interpretations with pencils, stencils, rulers, Sharpies, and crayons. Through this project, students are exploring line, shape, color, and composition while developing their own artistic voices.

Second graders are creating beautiful paper mosaics inspired by contemporary mosaic artist Laurel True. Using carefully measured pieces of paper, students are constructing mosaics in the shape of the initial of their first or last name, combining precision and creativity in their designs.

Meanwhile, third graders are exploring the imaginative world of Pablo Picasso through Cubist and Surrealist-inspired portraits. Using cut paper and glue, students are creating playful and expressive representations of themselves while experimenting with shape, proportion, and perspective.

From colorful robots and abstract compositions to intricate mosaics and imaginative portraits, our young artists are learning that there are countless ways to express ideas and creativity through art. Through these engaging experiences, students are developing artistic skills while gaining confidence in their ability to imagine, create, and share their unique perspectives.

We are so proud of our young artists and the creativity, curiosity, and joy they bring to the art room!
