Blue Devils Look Sharp in Spring League

The Huntington varsity boys’ basketball team is playing well in the opening weeks of the Michael Ferreira Era, winning games in a spring league based out of a Northport area facility.
Ferreira has been holding intramural sessions for interested players and putting them through workouts. He was the head coach of the varsity girls’ team at Syosset High School for 10 seasons, finishing with a 162–39 career record. During that time, the team won back-to-back Nassau County Championships and a Long Island Championship and Ferreira was honored to be named Coach of the Year six times.
Ferreira teaches College Engineering and College Architecture in Syosset. He holds undergraduate and graduate degrees from SUNY Oswego and Touro College.
“Our program was consistently competitive, reaching the Section VIII Final Four every season and earning a reputation as one of the most respected programs on the Island,” Ferreira said. “Our identity was built on a strong defensive mindset, high basketball IQ, and hard-working student-athletes who took pride in the way they played.”
The Syosset program also produced six All–Long Island selections, including multiple Players of the Year, along with several athletes who went on to play at the collegiate level. “We've always emphasized development, accountability, and creating a team-first culture that extends beyond the court,” Ferreira said.
The new coach inherits a team coming off a 7-13 season, but which returns many of its players. “I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity to lead the Huntington program,” Ferreira said. “This is a proud community with a winning tradition. I’m excited to be part of continuing that standard. My goal is to help build a program our players and community can take pride in, one that’s defined by toughness, discipline, and being team oriented. We defend relentlessly, play with discipline, and compete to win every night.”
Ferreira is known to be animated on the sidelines. The Huntington athletic department wants to turn games and game day into an “event” for fans, creating more fun and excitement for everyone.
“Just as important, I want to make sure our seniors have an unforgettable final year, one that reflects their commitment, growth, and leadership,” Ferreira said. “They’ve earned the opportunity to leave a lasting legacy, and we will work every day to ensure they do so in a way that sets the standard for those who follow.”
