Trustees Name Yenifer Mercado Principal of Jack Abrams School

Yenifer Mercado has been appointed to serve as principal of Jack Abrams School effective July 1. Huntington School Board members took the action during a public meeting this past Monday night.
Ms. Mercado will assume the position upon the retirement of current Principal Donna Moro, who will say goodbye to the district on June 30.
Ms. Mercado is currently an assistant principal in Central Islip. She describes herself as a “dedicated, experienced and enthusiastic education professional.” She has served in her current position for the past three years. Prior to that she worked as a dual language teacher in Patchogue-Medford before being promoted to Humanities Chairperson for grades K-6 for two years.
Jack Abrams School’s new principal obtained a BS degree at SUNY Old Westbury in childhood education 1-6 with a bilingual extension and a TESOL extension to her license at Dowling College. Ms. Mercado earned a MS degree in adolescence education-Spanish 7-12 at SUNY Old Westbury and an MA at Stony Brook University in educational leadership. She is studying at St. Peter’s University for a Doctor of Education degree in educational leadership.
Ms. Mercado identified her key skills as curriculum development, curriculum planning, data analysis and interpretation, relationship building, student-centered learning, communication, educational technology and change management.
