Huntington Observes Teacher Appreciation Week

May 5, 2026

Huntington UFSD is in the midst of celebrating Teacher Appreciation Week, which runs from May 4-8 across the United States. There are more than 400 faculty members spread across eight buildings in the district.

“Happy Teacher Appreciation Day to our incredible staff,” Superintendent Beth McCoy said. “Your unwavering commitment to students and your willingness to go above and beyond each day truly set you apart. You create meaningful learning experiences and foster a student-centered environment that supports the success of every child. Please know how deeply you are valued and appreciated by our administration, families, and the entire Huntington community.”

Throughout its long history, Huntington UFSD typically has been at the forefront of educational innovation. The New York State Legislature passed a law on April 13, 1857 authorizing creation of the Union School District of Huntington. The community gathered at a “special meeting” on September 7, 1857 and approved formation of the Union School District. It is said to have been the first district organized in the state for providing public education beyond eighth grade.

“Teachers illuminate paths of knowledge, guiding students toward limitless possibilities,” according to the National PTA. “From morning greetings and classroom discussions to after-school support and thoughtful feedback, teachers shine their light on every aspect of student growth and development. Each day, they spark curiosity, kindle creativity and brighten the future for every student in their care.”

Individual PTA units in Huntington UFSD are recognizing the teachers in their respective building in various ways. Huntington PTAs have always been especially supportive of district faculty members and the current era is no different.

Since 1984, the National PTA has designated one week in May as “a special time to honor the individuals who lend their passion and skills to educating our children. PTA events at the national, state and local levels celebrate the outstanding contributions teachers make.”

Once tenured, most Huntington teachers remain in service to the district for their entire career, providing stability and consistency. They are all highly educated and many have assumed added responsibilities, including serving as club advisors and coaches and taking on additional academic duties, including those after school.
