“How High School Athletics Has Impacted My Life”

Star student and three sport athlete Grace Gordon will soon head off to Lafayette College in Pennsylvania, where the Blue Devil great has been recruited to play lacrosse on the NCAA Division I lacrosse team there.

Ms. Gordon leaves Huntington after covering herself in glory over the past four years, excelling in tennis, basketball and lacrosse and compiling an academic record that would make anyone envious.

The teenager’s scholarship essay titled “How High School Athletics Has Impacted My Life” is a poignant and touching testament to the power of sports in young lives.

“High school athletics have profoundly shaped my life,” Ms. Gordon wrote. “They have influenced my character, daily routines, and future goals in ways I could never have foreseen. I have been a three-sport athlete, competing in tennis, basketball, and lacrosse throughout all four years of high school. These sports have provided me with much more than athletic skills; they have taught me invaluable life lessons. Life lessons in discipline, time management, work ethic, resilience, and most importantly friendship.”

The incoming Lafayette freshman scored 28 goals and added 39 assists to help lift Huntington to county, Long Island and New York State girls’ lacrosse titles this past spring.

“Participating in three sports requires strong discipline,” Ms. Gordon wrote. “Balancing practices, games, and training along with academic responsibilities meant sticking to routines, no matter how tired or busy I was. I learned that discipline was not about perfection, but about consistency and showing up, even on the toughest days. Juggling a packed athletic schedule with schoolwork and other commitments forced me to develop strong time management skills. Prioritizing tasks, and efficiently transitioning between roles of student, athlete, teammate, and friend have prepared me for a Division I lacrosse program.”

An Advanced Placement with Honor, Ms. Gordon was recognized as a Distinguished Senior last spring. She plans to study economics at Lafayette.

“Competing in three sports helped me develop a stronger work ethic,” Ms. Gordon wrote. “The drive to continuously improve, challenge myself, and set new goals became central to my character. High school athletics taught me that hard work is essential for long-term growth and success. Sports, by nature, involve both victory and defeat. I have faced injuries, losses, and setbacks that tested my determination. These moments are what have helped me to persevere and become more resilient. I learned that setbacks are opportunities for reflection and improvement.”

Ms. Gordon was inducted into Huntington’s National Honor Society, English Honor Society and Latin Honor Society. She was a member of Key Club and that Latin Club.

“The friendships I've made with my teammates are what have meant the most to me,” Ms. Gordon said. “Through long practices, tough losses, and historic wins, we became much more than just a team, we became family. Every bus ride, every huddle, and every laugh is what I will always remember. These bonds made my high school experience far beyond what I had hoped for. Being a high school athlete has given me a strong foundation for life beyond graduation, and I am forever grateful.”
