Washington First Graders Study Number Facts Fluency

January 21, 2026

Washington Primary School teacher Ivette Rosario’s first grade dual language class has been working on building their number facts fluency through the use of math centers.

The Washington youngsters love math. They really do. They enjoy the challenge of a tough problem and they like to use their intelligence and ingenuity to craft a solution.

In Ms. Rosario’s class, students:

• Use counters to solve addition problems with number bonds

• Demonstrate number–quantity correspondence

• Use visual models (counters) to represent addition and translate the model into an equation (number) sentence

• Place value activity by modeling numbers with connecting cubes and organizing them on a place value chart to represent ones and tens

• Practice and engage in a number sequencing activity counting to 100 by completing a hundreds chart

“Math centers take place in every Washington classroom daily,” Principal Dr. Michelle J. Richards said. “The students are able to practice math skills using manipulatives and various modalities.”

Dr. Richards and her teaching staff likes to set high standards for Washington students, who then go about working hard to accomplish as much as they can. Over the years, Washington alumni have gone on to attend most of the top colleges and universities in the country and work in every possible career field.
