Senior Caroline Mitek Leads Huntington into New Season

Senior Caroline Mitek, who scored 21 goals and added six assists, will lead the Huntington High School varsity field hockey team into the new season this fall. Mitek was rewarded with All-County honors and is expected to be one of the best players in the state.

Junior Ava Bencivenga (6 goals; 8 assists) is also back in uniform after she was named All-County Honorable Mention. Freshman Charlotte “Charlie” Kindelmann (1 goal; 4 assists) also returns after she garnered All-Classification recognition as an eighth grader on the varsity.

Key returnees include All-Division senior Sophie Hoffman (3 assists) and junior Alexa Wasoski (2 goals; 1 assist), who was Huntington’s Unsung Hero Award recipient. “Time and time again she recovered the ball and sent it back up to the offense,” Wright said.

Senior defender Elliot Manu, who was named to the All-Tournament team is also back in action along with junior Cassidy Harris, who scored a goal and displayed “amazing speed and endurance” and junior defender Shea Gilroy is another key contributor.

The Blue Devils compiled a 9-7 record and reached the playoffs last fall. Longtime veteran head coach Kathy Wright is assisted by Allison Conlon and Hildi Stanford.

Experienced returnees include goalie Abby Uvena along with Maya Schneider, Fran D’Eloia, Greenlee Stanford, Shelby Meystrik and Luisa Mackey.

Promising freshmen on the roster include Delaney Madden, Scarlett Phillips, Lia Rotunno, Gretchen Schmid and Ava Tortora. Eighth grader Poppy Carey and sophomore Greenlee Stanford give the Blue Devils even more depth.

Huntington is seeded No. 5 in Suffolk and will strive to make another playoff run this fall. The Blue Devils opened the season on road on Friday at Commack at 10 a.m.
