Blue Devil Girls’ Tennis Looks for Quick Rebuild

Coming off one of its finest seasons ever, the Huntington High School girls’ tennis team is looking for a quick rebuild and to remain highly competitive. One year after compiling a 12-3 regular season record en route to runner-up finishes in both the league and conference and a fifth place showing in Suffolk, the Blue Devils are back on the court preparing for a new set of challenges.

Jamie Fishlow is returning as varsity coach with Robert Gilmor back as the JV coach. Practices started on Monday morning. As of this past Saturday, 26 players had signed up after the team lost nine players to graduation last June.

Last fall, Huntington battled its way to a second place finish in a very competitive Suffolk Division I. “We won five close 4-3 matches and achieved the fifth seed in the county team tournament,” Fishlow said. “We had really big wins over Commack and William Floyd who also were seeded high in the county tournament. The skill development of the team was truly dramatic and it helped in our success.”

All-County senior Amanda Ganley returns along with All-League players Kate Gordon and Fiona Lynch. Ganley went 15-7 in No. 2 singles and Fishlow is expecting her to be even better this fall.

Grace Callery, Gace Kline and Mia Einemann are all expected to help the Blue Devils in doubles. There are also several promising underclassmen, including some freshmen who helped lead Finley to a 9-1 record last fall.
