Superintendent Welcomes Back Huntington UFSD

August 19, 2026

Superintendent Beth McCoy is excited to start a new school year. Huntington UFSD’s educational leader since June 2024, she sent a letter to faculty and staff members earlier this week expressing her high hopes for 2026/27.

The summer has been busy as the district hires to fill vacancies, races to complete facilities related projects, engages in summer curriculum initiatives and hosts several academic and enrichment programs.

“I hope your summer provided opportunities to relax, recharge, and spend quality time with the people who matter most,” Mrs. McCoy wrote. “As we come together once again, I am filled with excitement and optimism for all that lies ahead. The beginning of the school year is one of my favorite times. It is a season of fresh starts, renewed purpose, and endless possibilities. Our classrooms will soon be filled with curiosity, laughter, questions, and discoveries. Together, we have the opportunity to create experiences that inspire our students to learn, grow, and believe in themselves.”

As the final coats of paint and polish are being applied to all eight school buildings in the district, Huntington UFSD welcomed back administrators for two days of meetings this week.

“Before we begin, I want to extend my sincere gratitude to the many individuals whose hard work has prepared our schools for opening day,” Mrs. McCoy said. “Our custodial, maintenance, grounds, clerical, technology, administrative, food service workers, and operations teams have worked tirelessly throughout the summer to ensure that every building is safe, welcoming, and ready for students and staff. Their dedication often happens behind the scenes, yet it is essential to everything we do.”

Teachers will report to their buildings and classrooms on Monday and Tuesday, August 31 and September 1 for meetings and training sessions and to review their class lists and organize materials for the first day of classes on Wednesday, September 2.

“I also want to recognize the many faculty and staff members who spent part of their summer supporting our students through summer school, enrichment programs, curriculum development, professional learning, committee work, and countless other initiatives,” Mrs. McCoy wrote. “Your willingness to continue serving our students beyond the traditional school year reflects the commitment and passion that make Huntington such a special place. Thank you for all you do.”

Teachers have been sent schedules for the two conference days next week. There will be faculty and department meetings across the district, too.

“This year, we are delighted to welcome our newest teachers, administrators, and staff members to the Huntington family,” Mrs. McCoy said. “We know that beginning in a new district brings both excitement and uncertainty. I encourage all of us to continue the tradition that defines our schools, offering a warm greeting, a helping hand, and words of encouragement. The strength of Huntington has always been our people, and I know our newest colleagues will quickly discover the supportive, collaborative culture that makes this district exceptional.”

The school calendar is jam-packed with events. Meet the Teacher Nights will come quickly at Huntington High School (Wednesday, September 9 at 7 p.m.) and J. Taylor Finley Middle School (Thursday, September 10 at 6:30 p.m.).

As educators and school professionals, we are entrusted with something truly extraordinary,” Mrs. McCoy wrote. “Every interaction matters. Every lesson, conversation, smile, and act of kindness has the potential to change the course of a student's day, and many times, a student's life. While we often celebrate academic achievements, it is equally important to remember that the relationships we build create the foundation upon which learning flourishes.”

One of the most notable events of the year is Homecoming. The annual bonfire and festival will be held in the high school parking lot on October 15 with the Homecoming Day parade and football game on Saturday, October 17. Many teams will also play home games on Friday and Saturday of Homecoming Weekend.

“As we embark on another school year, let us continue to challenge ourselves to innovate, collaborate, and inspire,” Mrs. McCoy said. “Let us celebrate successes, support one another through challenges, and remain focused on our shared mission of providing every student with the opportunities, experiences, and encouragement they need to thrive.”
