Students & Faculty Vie in Math Honor Society Badminton Tournament

November 18, 2025

The Huntington High School Math Honor Society’s annual badminton tournament featured fierce competition after school in the gym. The event raised hundreds of dollars for the organization, which will be used to support the society’s annual scholarship program.

Faculty members turned out to play in the tournament.

Faculty advisors Jordan Swierkowski and JoAnn Ferazi helped coordinate the tournament behind the scenes. Ms. Ferazi assumed her position after department colleague Monica Racz retired last June.

The tournament champs included Josue Redondo, Anis Oyuela and Mia Kaufman, who all play on the Blue Devil varsity badminton team.

A pair of faculty teams included school counselors Diana Bonilla, Lauren  Brunoni, Ivy Alvayero, and Daniella Spillane and a mix of teachers and administrators that included Principal Rochelle C. Brown, Nicole Siegel, Gina Maniscalco, Chairman of English, 7-12 Joe Leavy and Bryan Outsen.

“We raised $360 which will be devoted to the society’s annual scholarship awards. A second fundraiser celebrating Pi (3.14) Day will be held in March,” Mrs. Swierkowski said.

Math Honor Society members also helped keep score, referee and they also participated in the tournament. To be eligible for membership in the society students must be enrolled in a math class higher than Algebra 2 (such as pre-Calculus, Calculus, AP Calculus, Introduction to Statistics, AP Statistics) and have a minimum unweighted grade average of 85 in Algebra, Geometry and Algebra 2.

“A huge thank you to Blue Devil varsity badminton coach Alex Nelson for supporting the tournament every year and helping us set up and borrow badminton equipment,” Mrs. Swierkowski said. “We could not do it without you, Mr. Nelson.”
