Wearing a Blue Devil Uniform is Special for Seniors

Four players who have meant so much to the Huntington varsity girls’ lacrosse program were saluted during Senior Day ceremonies at Blue Devil Stadium on Monday afternoon.
Devon St. John, Sabrina Boyle, Jenna Italiano and Sophie Carlson took a bow as head coach Katie Reilly spoke about each of the seniors and the role they have played in elevating the Huntington program to among the finest in Suffolk.
“It’s going to be so difficult to hand in my Huntington girls’ lax jersey at the end of this season, but I’m grateful that I got to wear number 25 with pride the past four years,” said Ms. St. John, who is headed to Cornell University, where she will play lacrosse for the Big Red. “Wearing this jersey tells me I’m part of something bigger than myself and I hope I can pass a legacy of the love for Huntington lacrosse down to whoever wears it next.”
It was an emotional day for the four seniors, their parents and family members. All four have played their heart out for the Blue Devils, who are currently atop the standings in Section XI.
“Wearing a Huntington lacrosse jersey has meant being part of something bigger than just the sport,” Ms. Carlson said. “Wearing my number allows me to honor players who came before me, showing up for my teammates and representing my school and community.”
The seniors’ teammates made posters for each of the four special players and filled each of them with photos. The posters were affixed to the bleacher facade. Each of the seniors took their poster home to cherish.
“Once you put the jersey on, you are given the chance to represent a program that is so special to this whole town,” Ms. Boyle said. “We get to represent the family we created on this team and create friendships that will last a lifetime. Especially with transferring here during my junior year, the moment I wore the jersey for the first time I felt as if I was a part of something special and that I was given the opportunity to continue the legacy of Huntington girls’ lacrosse.”
Following the game, parents staged a party for the seniors and their teammates on the track outside the stadium fieldhouse.
