Huntington Celebrates Teacher Appreciation Week

May 7, 2025

Huntington UFSD is in the midst of celebrating Teacher Appreciation Week, which runs from May 5-9 all across America. There are more than 400 faculty members spread across eight buildings in the district.

“As we celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week, I want to extend my deepest gratitude to each and every one of our educators,” Huntington Superintendent Beth McCoy said. “Your passion, resilience, and dedication to our students are the foundation of everything we do. In classrooms, and beyond, you inspire curiosity, foster growth, and help shape the future. Thank you for your tireless efforts, your care, and your extraordinary commitment to the mission of education. You are truly the heart of our schools.”

Huntington UFSD has always been at the forefront of educational innovation. The New York State Legislature passed a law on April 13, 1857 authorizing creation of the Union School District of Huntington. The community gathered at a “special meeting” on September 7, 1857 and approved formation of the Union School District. It is said to have been the first district organized in the state for providing public education beyond eighth grade.

“Teachers illuminate paths of knowledge, guiding students toward limitless possibilities,” according to the National PTA. “From morning greetings and classroom discussions to after-school support and thoughtful feedback, teachers shine their light on every aspect of student growth and development. Each day, they spark curiosity, kindle creativity and brighten the future for every student in their care.”

Individual PTA units in Huntington UFSD are recognizing the teachers in their respective building in various ways. Since 1984, the National PTA has designated one week in May as “a special time to honor the individuals who lend their passion and skills to educating our children. PTA events at the national, state and local levels celebrate the outstanding contributions teachers make.”

Once tenured, most Huntington teachers remain in service to the district for their entire career, providing stability and consistency. They are all highly educated and many have assumed added responsibilities, including serving as club advisors and coaches and taking on additional academic duties, including those after school.
