Trustees Approve New Engineering Graphics Course
July 11, 2025
The Huntington School Board has approved a new high school course titled “College Engineering Graphics and Technical Illustration.” It will formally debut in the 2026/27 school year. It will replaced “Computer Integrated Manufacturing” and be available to students in grades 10-12. Estimated annual enrollment for the full year course is 22 students.
“Engineering Graphics and Technical Illustration is a study of engineering graphics as a medium for communication and problem solving,” Assistant Superintendent Brenden Cusack told the trustees. “Course content will include a contemporary systematic process for the development of graphic representations to communicate ideas, objects, and systems through visual means. Instruction will address standards and practice accepted as universal language within the global society in this technical field. Emphasis will be placed on skills development through hands-on laboratory experience using CAD Software, digital and hands-on tools, equipment, and machinery.”
The course aligns with SUNY Oswego’s TEL 101 course. Huntington High School students can gain three college credits through dual enrollment offering at a reduced rate of $175 for the course. Students who qualify for free or reduced lunch receive an additional discount, bringing the cost of the course to $85.
“This course will serve as an excellent addition to our course offerings for any student who is interested in further study or a career in many STEM fields, including engineering, design and architecture,” Mr. Cusack said. “Many STEM-related careers require students to be knowledgeable in Design and Drawing for Production (DDP). DDP is a NYS-approved course where students learn about the design process. TEL 101 will cover the scope of the DDP course and extend it by utilizing AutoCAD software that works to send files to various machines in the class for creation and production.”
The Subject Matter Council approved the course on May 19 with the Educational Development Committee giving its approval on May 21. Huntington School Board members gave their approval on June 2.
“Students will develop critical skills that allow them to learn and apply geometric concepts, spatial reasoning, and problem-solving strategies,” states the course rationale. “This course of study supports career readiness with a focus on technical drawing standards while encouraging creativity, innovative thinking and problem solving. The course will begin with building students’ fundamental skill sets, which will serve as a foundation as students approach each new task and project with gradually increasing levels of rigor. This course may align with other courses in an interdisciplinary fashion, such as Virtual Enterprise, as students may have opportunities to collaborate in design and prototyping projects.”
