Blue Devils Capture Medals at League Championships

Carlos Marroquin has learned his lessons well. The Huntington senior has worked on his technique over the years and all of that effort paid handsome dividends as the teenager leaped a personal best 21’3.25 to win the Suffolk League II long jump championship.
Marroquin had jumped a personal best 20’7 on his first attempt at Suffolk West in Brentwood. But Jeremiah Davis of Connetquot took the lead in the event on his second attempt with a leap of 20’10. But Marroquin came right back on his third attempt to surpass the field and claim gold.
Marroquin also medaled in the triple jump where he placed fifth with a leap of 37’5.5. He later teamed up with lead leg senior Dom Mattio, second leg sophomore Eric Hein, and anchor leg junior Titan Elysee to finish second in the 4x400m relay in 3:32.
The relay quartet passed rivals North Babylon for second place, but fell short of the gold with Connetquot crossing the finish line in first with a time of 3:30.36. Elysee also earned a silver medal in the 300m dash with a time of 35.84.
Sophomore Colby Curran continues to improve, throwing the shot put a personal best of 45’1.5 for third place. Heinz was entered in the high jump, however, the event started the same time as his 600m dash final, which prevented him for jumping. But he did manage to pick up a bronze medal in the 600m dash finishing in fifth place in 1:27.
“This is a young team, however, they’ve shown great heart and determination when they compete,” Huntington head coach Ron Wilson said. “Next step is counties, which will be a difficult task, but I’m sure we will be up for the challenge.”
