Latin Honor Society’s New Members are Powerhouses

January 22, 2025

The Latin Honor Society’s newest class of inductees at Huntington High School is an especially scholarly group. Each of the teenagers has excelled in their studies. Students can enroll in their first full year Latin course as seventh graders.

Latin 7 is an introductory course designed to acquaint students with the basic elements of the Latin language and its impact on English today. This introductory course will offer students the opportunity to learn many words that appear on the PSAT. The course covers grammar, syntax and morphology (the study of words, roots, suffixes, etc.) Readings of simple prose selections from Latin authors and Roman culture are also included.

It is possible to enroll in a Latin course annually from grades 7-12. The language has always had a devoted following in Huntington.

The Latin Honor Society’s new members are all distinguished in their own right and collectively comprise a group that’s highly regarded around the high school.

Jasmine Awuah is a hardworking students who enjoys the Latin language and has blossomed in her study of Latin literature. The teenager is especially proud of her accomplishments this year and she striving to continue excelling as she looks forward to enrolling in Advanced Placement Latin next year.

Jostin Hernandez is never afraid of a challenge. He works hard and is a valued and respected classmate. His favorite aspect of Latin is seeing Latin roots in English and references to Latin in his other classes.

Mark Ingram is a passionate student of Latin. He particularly enjoys studying Roman history and discussing Greek and roman mythology. The teenager is a leader in class discussions when analyzing Latin text.

Cole Lima is a diligent student of Latin with a passion for the language. He can always be counted on to participate in activities or speak up in class when others might be hesitant. He hopes that as he continues his Latin studies, he will able to read authentic high level literature, including poetry, next year.

Gabriel Salinas is still another dedicated and hardworking Latin student with a particular fondness for vocabulary. He loves connecting Latin words he learns in class with English, Spanish and beyond. He hopes to be able to use these roots as he studies other languages and, perhaps, in the medical field, which he hopes to eventually enter.

The Latin Honor Society is led by co-Presidents Emily Kustera and Lauren Donaghy, Vice President Alexa Schirripa, Treasurer Isabella Careccia-Johnson, Secretary Kaylee Mata and Public Relations Coordinator Sage Cicciari.
