Ryan Scanlon & Nick Plachta Are Blue Devil Tennis Aces

August 4, 2025

Seniors Ryan Scanlon and Nicholas Plachta paced the Huntington High School varsity boys’ tennis team this past spring. Scanlon earned All-Division and All-County recognition while Plachta battled his way to All-Division honors.

Coached by Jamie Fishlow, the team was captained by Scanlon, Plachta and Ryan Ramirez. The roster included 13 players. The Blue Devils won three league matches and six overall. While most of the wins and losses were by decisive margins, Huntington fell three times by 4-3 scores.

“Even though we did not make the playoffs in the very strong Suffolk Division I, the team really improved throughout the year,” Fishlow said. “This team was closely knit and loyal to each other at all times. I would say the biggest match was when we defeated Walt Whitman, 5-2 to spoil their chances at making the playoffs.”

A five year varsity starter, Scanlon played No. 1 singles and went 8-4 in regular season matches and 12-7 overall. “He was our first singles player the past two years and he’s a really hard worker and dedicated to the team,” Fishlow said. “Ryan played the best kids in the county every match and was a great team leader and role model.”

Plachta was sharp in the No. 1 doubles position, with a 7-6 record in league matches and 7-7 overall mark. “Nick is another five year varsity starter and the hardest worker in the program,” Fishlow said. “He was willing to play even though he wasn’t always physically 100 percent. He achieved an above .500 record playing the best doubles teams in the county. He is another great team leader and role model for his teammates.”

The top players for the Blue Devils also included juniors Marin Mullaly, who won five matches playing No. 1 and No. 2 doubles; Evan Persampire, who was 2-2 in singles and 5-4 in first and second doubles and seniors Ryan Ramirez, who won six doubles matches and James Masler, who claimed victory in five doubles matches.

“Once again, I am proud of my team,” Fishlow said. “They were dedicated to coming to practices and giving 100 percent. Great friendships were formed as a result of all the time spent together. We had great senior leaders who set the tone for the personality of the team. I take pride in the fact that they always show up ready to practice and play. Despite the division competition, they always stayed positive and competed as hard as they could.”

Looking ahead to the spring of 2026, Mullaly will lead the returnees along with Ryan Donovan and Evan Persampire, Jake Chiclacos, Jackson Poli, Quinn Rinaldi, Henry Schmid and Ronan Driscoll. “They are all looking to step up and have an impact on the line-up,” Fishlow said.
