Huntington High School has scheduled an AP 101 Workshop for students and parents on Thursday, October 9 at 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend.
Huntington student participation in Advanced Placement courses and exams has been growing in recent years. The high school offers more than 30 AP courses and student performance on these AP exams has been improving.
The workshop on October 9 is billed, “Unlocking the Benefits of Advanced Placement.” It has been organized by Director of School Counseling and Testing Dr. Ricky V. Papandrea, Jr.
Students, parents and faculty members will gather in the high school auditorium for a presentation that will introduce the AP program and its benefits. Breakout sessions will follow with teachers to discuss subject specific questions and answers.
“AP courses challenge students to think critically, engage deeply and prepare for success in college and beyond,” Dr. Papandrea said.
Huntington High School continues to demonstrate academic excellence with remarkable growth in its Advanced Placement program over the past five years.
The number of students participating in AP courses and exams has steadily increased, as has student performance, with more students earning college-ready scores of 3 or higher than ever before.
In 2025, 450 students participated in at least one AP course; a significant 11.66 percent increase from 2024 and a 29.68 percent increase since 2021. The number of exams administered grew even more dramatically, from 876 in 2024 to 1,109 in 2025, representing a 26.6 percent increase in just one year.
AP success rates have also improved. This year, 84.22 percent of students who took AP exams scored a 3 or higher, compared to 76.18 percent in 2024, marking a 10.55 percent increase in the percentage of high-scoring students.
Dr. Papandrea attributes this success to a combination of high expectations, skilled teaching and student commitment.
“These results reflect the incredible effort our students and teachers put into academic excellence,” Dr. Papandrea said. “We continue to expand access to AP courses while maintaining a strong support system to ensure our students are not only participating, but thriving.”
The upward trend in AP participation and performance speaks to the school’s commitment to rigorous coursework and college readiness. As Huntington continues to grow its AP program, the goal remains clear: to challenge students, foster curiosity, and prepare them for postsecondary success.
