Mathematics can be a daunting subject for anyone. It can actually frighten some people, but not the kindergarteners in Washington Primary School kindergarten teacher Jessica Bermudez’s room.

“The students have been engaging in meaningful hands-on learning to deepen their understanding of mathematical concepts,” Ms. Bermudez said. “Using math manipulatives, students explored the ideas of greater than and less than by building and comparing two different groups of cubes.”

Washington teachers, similar to their counterparts across the district strive to get their students to understand that math is nothing to fear. They encourage them to take a deep breath and look at problems logically, using all the tools, knowledge and instruction that is made available to them on every grade level.

The kindergartners had fun during the recent lessons. “Through this interactive activity, students practiced counting, constructing sets, and engaging in mathematical discussions with their peers,” Ms. Bermudez said.

Using manipulatives throughout the lesson supported students in visualizing quantities, articulating their reasoning, and developing a stronger conceptual understanding of number relationships.

Kindergarteners are certainly not too young to start learning all about the foundations of math. That’s the opinion of experts. No one is arguing about it at Washington Primary School.

Washington students are buying into the concept that math is fun and nothing to be feared.
