Faculty Members Present at Social Studies Conference

November 3, 2025

A pair of Huntington UFSD faculty members were among the presenters at the Long Island Council for the Social Studies’ annual conference at the Marriott Melville last week.

Chairman of Social Studies Joseph Leavy and veteran social studies teacher Deborah Balducci made the presentation titled “Embedding Culturally Responsive Learning into a Global History and Geography Course Curriculum to a conference session attended by more than 40 Long Island teachers.

“Learning that is focused on cultural and heritage sharing connects directly to real history, so, in using a case study approach, we can guide students to make these important connections,” according to a presentation overview. “This workshop presents several cases of cultural and heritage sharing, each of which is directly tied to one of several units in the US History 8, Global 9 and Global 10 [state] framework. These learning experiences can be planned and implemented for a mini unit or several-day-lesson on global revolutions and this can also be taught in connection with students’ work with the National History Day theme of Revolution, Reaction and Reform.”

The 44th annual Long Island Council for the Social Studies conference was focused on teaching about the impact of revolution and its legacy.

“Ms. Balducci’s tireless efforts in researching, exploring and designing mutual heritage learning protocols served as the impetus for this well-received presentation,” Mr. Leavy said.
