Huntington Seniors Capture Suffolk Zone Awards

Devon St. John and Thomas Smith are among Huntington High School’s most spectacular seniors The pair impressed everyone over the past four years, gaining the respect and admiration of their teachers, coaches, classmates and teammates.

The teenagers’ spectacular academic performance, outstanding character, notable citizenship and exceptional abilities have been formally recognized by the Suffolk Zone of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.

The Suffolk Zone annually honors one senior male and female student from each high school in the county. The award recognizes outstanding performance in physical education over the course of high school.

Ms. St. John has played on the high school soccer, Unified bowling and lacrosse teams and she was the manager of the girls’ basketball team. She has compiled an exceptional academic record, serves as president of the Blue Devil Varsity Club and has captained all of her teams. She has been recruited to play lacrosse at Cornell University, where he will study economics.

Mr. Smith has played on the high school football wrestling and lacrosse teams. He, too, is an excellent student academically and has captained multiple varsity teams. He has been recruited to play lacrosse at Vassar College, where he will study economics.

To be eligible for the Suffolk Zone Award students must have earned at least a 90 average in physical education class and a minimum 3.0 overall grade point average in all classes prior to the senior year, demonstrate outstanding character, show leadership skills in both physical education class and general school-wide activities and serve as a role model for other students.

Suffolk Zone Honors Additional Huntington Students

The Suffolk Zone chapter also presents health and physical education leadership awards to sensational intermediate and middle school level students who have demonstrated outstanding performance and overall excellence over the years.

This year’s recipients from Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School are Leo Affa, Taylor Merrell and Emily Lizama.

Recipients from Woodhull Intermediate School include Aiden Legette, Madison Martine, Jake Molina and John Nicholas.

The honorees from Finley Middle School are Abigail Arelt, Luca Garcia, Kelita Aguilar and Edwin Lopez.

The Huntington students have been working with Finley teachers Marissa Bergmann, Jordan Ioviero and Travis Smith; Woodhull teachers Carrie Postel and Eric Triolo and Jack Abrams STEM Magnet School teachers Elizabeth Andersen and John Walsh.

All of the Huntington UFSD were also recognized at the April 22 public meeting of the Huntington Board of Education. Members of the group were presented with certificates by Superintendent Beth McCoy and the seven trustees.
