“Mean Girls – iconic comedy about life in high school – the bully – the sycophants – the bullied and the population at large,” Mr. Schwendemann mused. “Is that what the show is about or is there more? I believe we will find our answer if we take a look at the musical numbers. We are told from the outset that we are about to witness a cautionary tale – we are asked a seemingly simple question – how far would you go to be popular and hot? It reminds us that life is choices and that the choices we make might do more than make us ‘popular and hot.’ The songs give us a hint as to the roads we might be forced to travel if we wish to be the “it” person within our realm.
“Will we be Mean to find out Where Do We Belong? Are we willing to be the Apex Predator or do we look in the mirror and ask ourselves What’s Wrong with Me? Are we okay if Someone Gets Hurt along the way? We need to decide yes or Noooo! Do we have Social Media Ethics, are we Fearless in the face of social adversity? Will our World Burn if we succeed or fail in our quest for acceptance or would we just throw up our hands and say I’d Rather Be Me. So, as you watch us Do This Thing, think to yourself, ‘I will look out for you, we’ll light each other’s way. You’re all stars.’ Is this a cautionary tale just for the kids that roam the halls of the high school or do these choices follow us to adulthood? Something to think about, enjoy the show!”
