Washington Dual Language Students Collaborate to Read
March 20, 2025
Principal Michelle Richards and her teachers and staff will do just about anything to get Washington Primary School students interested in reading. They have all been tireless promoters of reading on every grade level.
Dual language teachers and students recently collaborated on a reading initiative that crossed over grade levels. Third grade teacher Vivian Joseph’s students read books to kindergarten teacher Jessica Bermudez’s class. The dual language students really enjoyed the exercise and both groups gained a new appreciation for books and reading in general.
“This activity allowed the older students to practice their reading skills while helping the younger students develop their listening and comprehension abilities,” Dr. Richards explained. “The third graders took turns reading aloud in both English and Spanish, creating a fun and interactive learning environment. The kindergarteners enjoyed listening to the stories, and the event helped strengthen the bond between the two classes while encouraging bilingual language development.”
Keeping school exciting and fresh for students takes work, but Dr. Richards and her teaching corps are up to the task. Teaching students to read and read well is parts art and science. That, too, takes hard work, but again the professionals at Washington School are ready for the challenge.
Dr. Richards asks all parents and family members to encourage students to read at home. The titles of the books or the topics that they cover are up to the kids themselves. Books will bring the youngsters on adventures all over the world and across time and history. The children will never have a boring day if they learn to love reading.
