Huntington UFSD – Always a Leader

March 20, 2025

While it’s easy to look at Huntington UFSD as tradition laden since the district traces its roots to the hiring of the first public school teacher in February 1657, but truth be told the 4,000 student strong system has constantly reinvented itself to remain among the very finest on Long Island and in the state.

The Huntington School District community mirrors America, with students and staff of every race and ethnic background. It is in this atmosphere that students are challenged academically, artistically, musically and athletically and where they grow socially and culturally. Lasting friendships are frequently forged. New experiences are enjoyed and personal horizons are broadened. District schools are a model of togetherness and understanding.

Huntington UFSD has always been a leader in K-12 education. Since the first class of six seniors graduated in July 1862, the district’s alumni ranks have grown to more than 50,000. When state enrollments peaked in the 1970’s, Huntington’s senior class totaled 750 or more. At its facility and enrollment height, Huntington UFSD featured three junior high schools and nearly 9,000 students.

Today’s Huntington UFSD features eight buildings, including six on the elementary grade levels. The district and Huntington High School continue to be highly regarded as evidenced by ratings by Niche.com and US News & World Report.

“Huntington UFSD has a rich history of excellence and innovation that spans over three centuries,” Superintendent Beth McCoy said. “As we continue to build on our tradition of academic rigor,  high quality fine and performing arts and athletic programs, and community engagement, we are committed to providing a dynamic and inclusive educational experience that empowers every student to reach their fullest potential. Our dedication to fostering a culture of creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration ensures that Huntington remains a leader in K-12 education today and for generations to come.”

Huntington UFSD has so many “crown jewels” that it’s hard to summarize all of them in one short article. Among them are the K-5 dual language, video broadcasting, Virtual Enterprise and mock trial programs, STEM initiatives throughout the district, including maker spaces/innovation lab, 1:1 computer devices for all K-12 students, state and nationally recognized art, music, robotics and athletics programs, popular and unique physical education courses and modern classroom and co-curricular facilities.

The district boasts 31 Advanced Placement courses, universal pre-kindergarten for resident students, specialized special education/life skills programs for students with disabilities, elective courses to meet every possible interest, state recognized competitive marching band, about 20 music ensembles, award winning drama club programs, SEARCH and Math and Science Olympiad programs, student newspapers, science and history fairs and contests, and extensive district art show and intramural programs for all students.

The district remains financially strong, with almost no long term debt and fully funded programs. Independent audits have complimented the district’s business office and conservative budgeting practices.

The faculty is diverse and highly educated in their respective fields. Teachers routinely capture awards for their accomplishments.

The district’s PTA’s, Booster Club, Band Parents Association and the Huntington Foundation for Excellence in Education are all integrally involved in supporting students and teachers.

Huntington routinely sends its graduates to the top colleges and universities in the country along with military academies, the finest trade and vocational schools and highly regarded employers.

Alumni are fiercely loyal with many giving back their time or supporting district organizations with financial donations and student scholarships.

Huntington UFSD remains an educational leader; 368 years after the community hired its first public school teacher.
