Huntington Boys’ Indoor Track Upholds Tradition
March 19, 2025
The Huntington High School boys’ indoor track and field team uphold the Blue Devils’ tradition for excellence this past winter. Huntington’s 4x400m relay won the Suffolk title and a string of other performances were notable.
Coached by Ronald E. Wilson, Eli Acosta and Dr. Haidee Bonhurst, the Blue Devils were captained by Eric Heinz, Carlos Marroquin, Titan Elysee and Dom Mattio.
“We were a young team that performed well during the season,” Wilson said. “They gave themselves opportunities to rise, but inexperience limited them from winning most of the events.”
Wilson hopes the team gained that needed experience this past winter. A large majority of the 36 athlete strong roster will be returning next year. “We will return a well-balanced group of experienced young men who had to take their lumps this year,” the coach said.
The top athletes included:
• Senior Carlos Marroquin: He was Huntington’s top long jumper, earning All-County honors, and ran a leg on the 4x400m relay that won the Suffolk title.
• Junior Titan Elysee: A hurdler and sprinter, Wilson said “Titan is the top performing athlete on our team. He can do it all.”
• Sophomore Eric Heinz: “He’s an up and coming athlete with tremendous talent,” Wilson said. “We have two more years with him and he will be the next ‘Infinite Tucker’ that can do it all and will win!”
• Senior Dom Mattio: The top performing short sprinter on the team, he also ran a leg on the county titlist 4x400m relay. “He always put us in a great position when competing,” Wilson said.
• Junior Matthew Ross: A throwing specialist who is big and strong with unlimited potential. “He should be a state contender next season,” Wilson said.
• Sophomore Colby Curran: “He’s the little train that won’t stop at perfection,” Wilson said. “He’s the hardest working young man in the throwing circle with shot put and weight throw. He exceeded expectations.”
The highlight of the season came when the Blue Devils upset defending county 4x400m relay champions Longwood and the Suffolk Large School Championships.
Wilson’s goals for next winter including winning league and county titles and “to put our hat back in the race for a state and national championship.”
