Two Weeks of Reading Adventures at Flower Hill

March 17, 2025

Flower Hill Primary School’s Pick A Reading Partner program kicked off in early March and it’s been an “incredible adventure,” Principal Cindy Siegel said.

Assistant Superintendent Dr. Rubie Harris at the Flower Hill read in.

“This year’s theme, ‘Reading: Your Ticket to Adventure,’ has truly brought books to life for our students, taking them on exciting literary adventures,” Ms. Siegel said. “Each student received a home packet filled with engaging activities, including bingo, a bookmark contest and a special scavenger hunt at the Huntington Public Library.”

One of the highlights of the past two weeks has been the daily mystery readers. “Students eagerly anticipated the surprise of having family members visit their classrooms to share a favorite story,” Ms. Siegel said.

A particularly special moment was when Superintendent Beth McCoy read “Pete the Cat and His Magic Sunglasses” to teacher Caroline Coffey’s class.

“A huge thank you to our dedicated class representatives for their creativity in decorating classroom doors to represent countries from around the world,” Ms. Siegel said. “With passports in hand, students ‘traveled’ around the world, exploring different countries and cultures through books.”

Flower Hill also held a book swap, to the delight of students. “Thanks to all the donations, students had the opportunity to choose books to take home, helping them build their at home libraries,” Ms. Siegel said.

Flower Hill held its annual “read-in” last Thursday night. “Students created their own binoculars, listened to engaging presentations and enjoyed reading with their families,” Ms. Siegel said.

Huntington High School social studies teacher Camille Tedeschi captivated students with a presentation on Kenya, sharing her personal photos, stories, and artifacts from her travels. Another engaging presentation was given by Alyssa Lofaro, who shared her experiences in helping people book travel tours.

“As our PARP comes to a close, we look forward to celebrating with a closing assembly on Friday, March 21,” Ms. Siegel said. “We can’t wait to see where books take our students next.”
