Southdown Second Graders Have Fun with Flat Stanley

March 6, 2025

Southdown Primary School second graders expanded their love of reading, writing and exploring through a fun Flat Stanley project. After students in teachers Dana Hartough and Theresa Duffy’s class finished reading “Flat Stanley” by Jeff Brown, they took their own Flat Stanley on many adventures around Southdown.

Southdown second graders had a blast with Flat Stanley.

Flat Stanley visited Principal Jill Amott-Erwig’s office, did the announcements with clerical Karen Hernandez, exercised in the gym during physical education and used the swings and slide on the playground during recess.

Students took Flat Stanley to ENL, math and reading classes where Flat Stanley read books, played math games and learned along with the students. “After his adventures, students used the writing process to complete journal entries to retell and describe the experience,” Ms. Hartough.

Many students took Flat Stanley home during winter break and gave him more adventures to go on. He spent time in our students’ homes enjoying the week off. Flat Stanley visited a McDonald’s, the mall and a bagel store.

Students took Flat Stanley to New York City to eat at Serendipity Restaurant and to browse around the American Museum of Natural History. He traveled to Florida with Mrs. Duffy and to Italy with Mrs. Hartough.

“It was a great experience and adventure for all,” Ms. Duffy.
