ATH Presents Carol Soskil Scholarship to Tess Markotsis

July 11, 2025

The Associated Teachers of Huntington presented a $1,000 scholarship to Huntington High School Class of 2025 member Tess Markotsis in honor of longtime district reading teacher Carol Soskil, who passed away in August 2020.

An Advanced Placement Scholar, Ms. Markotsis was recognized as a Distinguished Senior last spring following a great four year run through the high school. She will be attending the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and plans to study elementary education.

The ATH is the professional organization of the district’s more than 400 teachers. ATH President Elizabeth Flanagan announced Ms. Markotsis as this year’s Carol Soskil Memorial Scholarship recipient.

Ms. Markotsis possesses a wonderful personality, warm and friendly with an inviting smile. She is a kind, considerate and gentle young woman who is surrounded by a loyal group of friends. While at Huntington High School, she pursued volunteer community service through the Key Club.

Ms. Soskil was a beloved reading teacher at Washington Primary School. Students were at ease around her. She worked in multiple programs outside of the regular school day, including the summer. Her faculty colleagues loved her just as much as the kids did and deeply respected her as a consummate professional.

Relationships have always been important to Ms. Markotsis and that shows no signs of changing at UMass Amherst. “One of the most meaningful parts of my high school experience has been the friendships I’ve made and the people I’ve met along the way,” the new alum said. “These relationships have made my journey more enjoyable and memorable.”
