Blue Devils Qualify for Millrose Games Finals
January 10, 2025
The Huntington High School indoor boys’ track and field’s 4x400m relay team has qualified to run in the 117th Millrose Games at the Nike Track & Field Center at The Armory in Manhattan.
The Blue Devils placed sixth in a field of 18 teams from Nassau and Suffolk in the Long Island division of the 4x400m relay. Billed as “the world’s premier indoor track and field event,” Huntington’s athletes badly wanted to gain a berth the Millrose Games finals and they did.
Huntington quartet of lead leg senior Dominic Mattio, second leg sophomore Eric Heinz, third leg senior Carlos Marroquin and anchor leg junior Titan Elysee circled the track in 3:30.67, placing third in their heat and sixth overall in the Long Island division. (Senior Emiliano Colman is the alternate.)
In the last ten years, Huntington has won the Long Island 4x400m relay in 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2022 and 2023. The Blue Devils hold the current meet record of 3:17.36, which was run in 2016 by current state record holders Infinite Tucker, Kyree Johnson, Lawrence Leake and Shane McGuire. This same quartet went on to win the national championship in 3:10.93, which remains a New York State record.
The Blue Devils were accompanied to The Armory by head coach Ron Wilson and Assistant Coach Eli Acosta. The pair liked what they saw and believe Huntington will be well prepared and well positioned for the finals on February 8.
“The meet began back in 1908, when the Millrose Athletic Association was formed by employees of the John Wanamaker Department Store,” according to organizers. “For nearly 100 years, Millrose took place at the legendary Madison Square Garden, where legends of the sport such as Loren Murchison, Paavo Nurmi, Eamonn Coghlan, Cheryl Toussaint, Carl Lewis, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Bernard Lagat and many others made their names and built their legacies. In 2012, the Millrose Games found a new home at the The Armory, a state-of-the-art facility that has been nicknamed ‘The Fastest Track in the World.’ Millrose features top quality competition at every level, with youth, high school, collegiate, professional and masters athletes all coming together to test their limits.”
