Afro-Caribbean Heritage Club Focuses on Culture & History

Huntington High School’s Afro-Caribbean Heritage Club is focused on both culture and history as the organization looks forward to the future.

The club is led by co-advisors Sylvia Belanger and Malcolm Eugene. Ms. Belanger is a longtime security guard at the high school while Mr. Eugene is a second year special education teacher. The pair works together nicely and students have flocked to the group.

The Afro-Caribbean Heritage Club awarded a $500 scholarship last June to Class of 2024 member Kaylee J. Adams, who helped develop the club. She is currently studying biology on a pre-med track at the University at Albany. She hopes to become a trauma surgeon as also join in research on polio and Alzheimer’s disease.

“This inclusive group is for everyone who loves to learn about their own heritage and that of others,” states a club profile. “The club seeks to empower students and to bring forth positivity to the school as a whole. If you love people, positivity, music, food, culture, history and Huntington High School, this club is for you.”

The club is led by students Lindsay Depeine and Hannah Valenzuela-Ayala. Club members and advisors are pursuing an active agenda to meet the needs of students and to benefit the high school community at large.
