Junior Division Special Awards at National History Day

Projects entered into this year’s National History Day contest in Huntington UFSD reached new heights for breadth and quality of research across numerous competition categories.
Several junior division entries were recognized with special awards. The junior division includes projects submitted by seventh and eighth graders attending J. Taylor Finley Middle School and sixth graders in Huntington UFSD’s SEARCH program.
This year’s National History Day theme is “Rights and Responsibilities in History.” All projects in every category was required to incorporate this theme.
The SEARCH students were mentored by teacher Jessica Risalvato. The Finley students were guided in their research by teacher Jarrad Richter.
Eighth graders Matthew Krull and Gabe MacManus garnered the Outstanding Junior Entry on Sports History Award for their entry titled “Holmes vs. Atlanta: Swinging Away at Segregation.”
Sixth graders Nico Chan Camargo and Joe Castillo Guevara captured the Outstanding Junior Entry on Latino American History Award for their project titled “LULAC: League of United Latin American Citizens.”
Seventh graders Scarlett Phillips, Quinn Robertson and Gabriella Zielinski won the Outstanding Junior Entry on Military History Award for their entry titled “Pearl Harbor.”
Sixth graders Rosie Carillo, Saige Catlan, Juliet Grijalva de la Cruz and Monica Ng were honored with the Group Performance Award and the Outstanding Junior Entry on Local History Award for their work titled Votes for Women: The Spirit of 1776.
