Symphonic Pops Orchestra to Perform at HHS on March 2

February 6, 2025

The Long Island Symphonic Pops orchestra will be joined by the Huntington High School string orchestra for an inter-generational concert on Sunday, March 2 at 2 p.m. The event is open to the public. No tickets are required. Kids are free. There is a suggested donation of $10 for adults, but it is not required.

Members of the Symphonic Pops look forward to the concert every year. The afternoon performance is expected to draw a large crowd. The public is invited to attend the concert, which will be held in Huntington High School’s spacious and comfortable auditorium. The facility is handicapped accessible.

“The Intergenerational Pops Concert is an annual performance where the high school symphony orchestra gets the unique opportunity to combine with the Symphonic Pops of Long Island for a special concert together,” high school orchestra director James DiMeglio said. “The SPLI is an organization that was originally formed as an orchestra for senior citizen musicians, but over the years has transformed into a multigenerational group. This concert provides an opportunity for high school-age musicians to work side by side with older and more experienced musicians, from whom they can learn a lot about not only music, but life as well.”

Preparing for the concert is a challenging endeavor each year. The high school musicians need to master a large repertoire of new and difficult music in a very short amount of time. Rehearsals are often intense affairs and observers have been impressed with how quickly the teenagers learn the music.

“The music for this concert was selected by the students and dives into the mythical, the magical and the majestic,” Mr. DiMeglio said. “Everyone involved in this performance is very excited to bring a stellar concert experience for our audience!”

The theme of this year’s concert is “Witches, Pirates & Dragons.” The Symphonic Pops is under the musical director of Taylor Massey. Visit www.symphonicpopsli.org for more information.

“The Huntington High School Music Department is very excited to once again welcome our friends and colleagues form the Symphonic Pops of Long Island,” said Kimberly Musial, district director of fine and performing arts. “Having such a wide age-range of performers on stage showcases that music is never something that is truly mastered. It requires continual practice, self-reflection and hard work. While it may become an occupation for some of our students, we hope that it will remain a hobby most others. This concert truly showcases the epitome of what it means to be a lifelong learner.”
